6L90 Transmission Explained

  • The 6L90 transmission is a six-speed hydraulically operated automatic transmission designed for longitudinal engines and particularly for rear-wheel and rear-focused four-wheel drive vehicles. Built-in 2007, this tranny consists of six forward gears and one reverse gear. The first gear ratio is 4.03, second:2.36, third: 1.53, fourth:1.15, fifth: 0.85, sixth:0.67, and the reverse at 3.07.
  • Instead of the usual planetary gear set configuration, wider gear ratios were used, allowing for better performance and fuel economy. The 6L90 transmission features multiple torque ratings, which makes it suitable for different engines and applications. And also allows users to upgrade by building one with even higher torque to withstand higher engines.

6L80 Transmission Explained

  • The 6L80 transmission is a 6-speed automatic transmission manufactured by General Motors. Here are some key details about it:
  • Introduction: The 6L80 was introduced in 2006 and has become popular in more than 8 million trucks, SUVs, and cars. It’s used in various GM models, including the Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade1.
  • Purpose: The 6L80 was designed to help GM meet stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations. By utilizing more gears, it keeps the vehicle in its power band longer, resulting in improved fuel efficiency (approximately 4-7% better than the previous generation)2.
    Torque Rating: The SuperMatic 6L80-E 6-speed automatic transmission offers an exceptional torque rating of 650 lb.-ft., which is a 45% increase over regular production versions of the 6-speed automatic3.
